DESCRIPTION:
This presentation provides non-judgmental understanding of sexual addiction and its relationship to both trauma survival and problems with intimacy and healthy adult sexuality. The material will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of sexual addiction and clear insight into sexual sobriety and relationship healing. Material offered will be useful to professionals having to deal with both sexual addicts and spouses.
"Sexual & Pornography Addiction in the New Media Frontier"
DESCRIPTION:
This presentation provides non-judgmental understanding of sexual addiction and its relationship to adult problems with intimacy and healthy adult sexuality. The material will discuss survivor shame as it relates to the shame of addictive sex, while offering clear direction toward sexual sobriety and relationship healing. The effect of the new media frontier (social networks, smart phones and the like) will be woven into the growing discussion of how online life affects the problem of sexual addiction.
1) Define "problem" sexual behavior and describe 3 characteristic symptoms of problem sexual behavior and sex addiction.
2) Outline the possible origins of sexually addictive behavior and define "recovery."
3) Discuss the psychodynamics of the non-addicted spouse and possible coping strategies at disclosure/discovery.
4) Participants will gain knowledge of basic referral resources and information including: Self-help groups, review of the 12 step programs, online resources and useful articles and books.
"Hypersexual Disorder and Sexual Addiction"
This presentation provides non-judgmental understanding of sexual addiction and the controversies surrounding the "diagnosis" of sexual addiction. It also provides information on the differences and similarities between the clinical evidence for sexual addiciotn and the empirical evidence of Hypersexual Disorder as described in the DSM.
1) Participants will relate some of the controversies surrounding the "diagnosis" of sexual addiction.
2) The audience will appreciate the differences and similarities between the clinical evidence for sexual addiction and the empirical evidence for Hypersexual Disorder.
"It's a Family Affair"
This presentation provides non-judgmental information how Sexual Addiction impacts spouses and partners. It also disseminates information on the concept of a partner's/spouse's traumatic response as well as their treatment and recovery.
1) Participants will learn how to assess the spouse/partner of those clients who present with Hypersexual Disorder
2) Participants will be understand the concept of a traumatic response to learning of their spouse/partner's behavior, and will be able to recognize symptoms and signs.
3) Participants will understand what treatment and recovery look like for the family member and the couple.

Robert Weiss, LCSW CSAT-S: Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S is Director of Sexual Disorders Services for Elements Behavioral Health and Founding Director of The Sexual Recovery Institute – an outpatient sexual addiction treatment center. An acknowledged writer of sexual addiction literature, he is co-author of "Cybersex Exposed: Simple Fantasy to Obsession", author of "Treating Sexual Addiction" in The Handbook of Addictive Disorders, Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men (Alyson Books) and co-author: Untangling the Web: Sex, Porn and Fantasy Addiction in the Internet Age. Currently Mr. Weiss serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity. A UCLA MSW graduate and trained under the direction of Dr. Patrick Carnes, Mr. Weiss is a former board member and committee chair of The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health and has lectured for The UCLA Neuro-Psychiatric Institute, The American Association of Sex Educators and Therapists, The National Association of Social Work and in Washington DC at The NIH (National Institutes of Health), The Betty Ford Center, Hazelden, and many others. Recent media appearances include The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Larry King Show, ESPN, The Discovery Channel, The Today Show, Dateline NBC, and Anderson Cooper 360. In a field with very few recognized experts, Mr. Weiss is an acknowledged professional in the assessment and treatment of persons with compulsive and addictive sexual disorders.
Martin Kafka, MD: Martin P. Kafka MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, a Senior Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital, Belmont MA and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In 2008, he was selected as a member of the Sexual and Gender Disorders Working Group (Paraphilias Sub-Working Group) of the American Psychiatric Association for the formulation of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition due for publication in 2113. In 2010, Dr. Kafka was awarded the Carnes Award for achievement by the Society for Sexual Health. His research interests include the developmental antecedents and clinical manifestations of hypersexuality, the paraphilias, and paraphilia-related disorders, as well as the pharmacologic treatment of these conditions. Dr. Kafka has published over 35 peer-reviewed original research, review articles and book chapters on issues related to sexual impulsivity disorders. Dr. Kafka is a charter member of the International Association for the Treatment of Sex Offenders, the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) and the International Academy of Sex Research. He serves on the editorial boards of Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment and Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention. He was the president of the Massachusetts chapter of ATSA from 2001-2007.
Dr. Kafka has given many presentations nationally and internationally on Axis I comorbidity in males with paraphilias, pharmacologic treatment for sexual offenders, and male hypersexual desire disorders, as well as publishing book chapters and many articles on these topics in such peer-reviewed journals as International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment and the Archives of Sexual Behavior. He participated in a scientific meeting on the theme of pedophilia that took place in the Vatican in 2003 and has also given plenary lectures in Caracas, Venezuela, Torino Italy, Vienna Austria, Athens Greece, Hamburg Germany and Jerusalem Israel .
Dr. Kafka received his medical degree, (cum laude) from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He completed an internship and a residency in psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
Jodi F. Conway, LCADC, MAC, CSAT: Jodi Foord Conway has been working in the field of addictions for 20 years. She is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor and a Master's Level Addiction Counselor. She is also certified in hypnotherapy and experiential therapy. For her Certification in Sexual Addictions, Jodi trained with Patrick Carnes, PhD. She has been a consultant/trainer/facilitator for parenting groups, schools, business and community organizations. She has extensive experience working with Employee Assistance Programs and the Medical and Legal Communities. In addition, Jodi has been quoted as an expert in The New York Daily News, London's Telegraph newspaper, Seventeen Magazine and various other professional magazines. She has appeared on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 and several other cable TV and radio programs. She previously was co-owner and Executive Director of Northern Valley Wellness Center, a group counseling practice. She currently maintains a private practice, specializing in compulsive sexual behaviors, in Northern New Jersey and The Stony Brook Center.
Marjorie Kroeger, LMHC, CSAT: Marjorie Kroeger is the Founder and Executive Director of the Stony Brook Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. She is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, trained by Dr. Patrick Carnes through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). She opened the Stony Brook Center in January of 2010 after maintaining a private practice specializing in sex addiction. She is a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Massachusetts and a member of the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association and the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health.
