How to Get My 19 Year Old Son to Move Back Home?
Question by %: How to get my 19 year old son to move back home?
My son recently moved out and has been living with a couple of his friends. He has a long history with drug addiction and on New Years he was arrested for possessing and being under the influence of that particular drug. My wife and I strongly agree that the best place for him is to move back home so we can help him recover and keep an eye on him to make sure he is not involved with his old habits. However, when I talked to him about moving back home it escalated into a fight and he resisted our offer by saying that he doesn’t need help, that he is healthy, and that he is an adult and free to do what he wants. I know that he does need help and is not healthy for a fact, but he stands by the adult argument. How can I get my son to move back home?

Are you sitting down? Because I have some bad news: You can’t.
The best thing you can do is establish a “the door’s always open” arrangement, but trying to persuade him to come back home is a big mistake and will serve to merely estrange you from him. And I should add, the “open door” policy SHOULD have some strings attached…as in “if you’re trying to get straight…”
Otherwise, hold onto your hearts. My sister was a substance abuser and I went to the wall for her, but it was ONLY when SHE decided she was ready to get sober, was she ready to get sober. Alas, as in all too many cases, it was by then too late because her heart and liver and lungs were failing her.
Be strong. Good luck.
