Author Dusty Miller
Event on 2012-10-20 14:00:00
Please help us welcome local author Dusty Miller to the store as she presents her new book, Danger in the Air.
Alice Ott, a retired school teacher turned cyber sleuth, is determined to expose a deadly conspiracy in the nation's Capitol. Alice mobilizes her friends, the Raging Grannies, and persuades her long-lost lover, the handsome microbiologist Gerard, to help her pursue the unsolved mystery of the anthrax letters attack. When Alice and her crew stumble on a bioweapons expert from the epicenter of U.S. bioweapons hiding out in Vermont, they join forces to expose the true origins of the deadly anthrax letters. In taking on the most sinister players in this international cover-up, Alice, Gerard, and a small group of ordinary citizens bravely reveal the darkest secrets of biological weapons, and still make time for love.
Dusty Miller believes that everyone has a story. Your story might be about an unusual childhood, a transformative relationship, a passion for justice, a life-changing journey, or the bittersweet memories born of loss. Miller, a nationally-known trauma and addictions specialist-turned-mystery-writer, will talk about how to free yourself from obstacles to writing your story. Dusty believes that fiction saved her life, and shares how she came to write her first mystery novel after a long career as a psychotherapist and non-fiction writer.
Miller’s own choice to begin a new career path at sixty-two, was propelled by her life-long addiction to fiction, and her commitment to social justice. "I wanted to write a mystery, I wanted to find an innovative way to get people thinking about disturbing real-life situations, and I was also determined to create an older sleuth,” says Miller. “Alice Ott, my extraordinary cyber sleuth, is a sharp, well-informed private citizen involved in her community.”
Frances Crowe, 93 year-old Northampton peace activist, is one of the primary inspirations for Miller’s Alice Ott mystery series. Miller, 67, grew up in Northampton, and admired Crowe from an early age. “Frances provides a wonderful model for my central character, and we have teamed up to reveal the real dangers embedded in the fictional Alice Ott series.”
Miller’s greatest desire is to help others find their Writer Within, and give them the courage to tell their stories. In addition to providing a lively read, Miller believes that her fictional sleuth can inspire audiences of any age. “If you listen to Alice Ott, you can’t help but believe that you are never too young, too old, too poor, or too fragile to stand up and tell your story, your truth,” Miller says.
This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome!
