I Love Boston University. What Other Colleges Might I Like? (More Details Below.)?
Question by : I love Boston University. What other colleges might I like? (More details below.)?
This year, I’m a college freshman at a private liberal arts college. I’m definitely at the wrong place, and applying for transfer for sophomore year. I love Boston University– but I know I need to apply to more than one place. Here’s what I’m looking for in a school:
>preferably, located in the Northeast, but not NYC. I love the city of Boston, so if you think of any suggestions in that area, I’d love to hear them. I’d prefer an urban setting.
>Strong communications program, ideally with an advertising major or focus.
>Motivated students. This is one of my reasons for transferring. I love being around driven people, and I’m not getting that here. I guess what I’m looking for are schools that have fairly rigorous demands and high standards for applicants.
>Larger school.
>Low drug use. I’m aware that there’s going to be some drug use at just about any school that I apply to, but I prefer not to be around it. It’s a really significant aspect of student culture here, and that’s another reason why I’m looking to transfer. Drinking doesn’t bother me, and I know it’s everywhere. I’m not concerned about that.
I’m aware that schools have higher standards for transfers than they do for regular applicants. Here are my stats, if they help.
High school GPA: 4.0 on a weighted scale (AP classes worth 5.0)
SAT: 2150
College GPA: The semester isn’t over yet, but I expect it to be between a 3.7 and 4.0
If you think of some colleges that meet just some of the qualities on my list, I’d still love to hear them. (If you explain a bit about why they’re good or what they’re lacking, I’ll give you bonus karma brownie points.) I know I also need to have some safety schools, so if you have any ideas for those… you get the idea. Thank you!

Your major aside, here are some schools to consider:
Boston College — suburban Boston location
Tufts
M.I.T. — a high college GPA combined with your high school record and SAT scores will help you at all of these schools
Northeastern — but you can probably aim higher
Yale — may not accept transfers (you’ll need to check on that)
Cornell (but not an urban location)
Penn — likely to be strong in communications, especially anything business-oriented
Drexel
Georgetown — nice residential area, but 1/2 mile walk from campus to the subway
George Washington — should be strong in communication, but may be oriented more toward politics than advertising (you’d need to check on that) — located right downtown in D.C. with easy subway access to the entire area
American — in residential part of Washington, D.C. with subway access to rest of city
U. of Maryland — strong in communications and journalism — suburban Washington, D.C. location with subway access to the city
