Animal Research Helps Explain the Central Nervous System

Although experiences in the world shape behavior, understanding how the nervous system works is critical to a complete understanding of behavior, including behaviors that are problematic in mental illness, memory disorders, and drug addiction. Much of what we know about the relationships among anatomy, physiology, and behavior has come from animal research.

Animal research has been the major contributor to our knowledge of basic learning processes and motivational systems, such as hunger, thirst, and reproduction.

What Is Inpatient Hospital Depression Treatment Like?

Question by : What is inpatient hospital depression treatment like?
I am 17 (almost 18) and I have been depressed for over six years and I am scared of what I have become. Despite several years of good counseling and trying several medications, I still find myself extremely depressed, self harming and abusing drugs (not addicted but every day use of SOMETHING). Am I a good candidate for inpatient hospital treatment? If so, what is it like?

Is There a Support Group for Families Who Have a Member Addicted to World of Warcraft?

Question by Susanne W: Is there a support group for families who have a member addicted to World of Warcraft?
My daughter (20) has an addiction to the online game called, “World of Warcraft”. She rarely leaves her room, has no friends, no motivation to go to school or work, and is depressed. I realize that the game is not the core problem, but I am unable to think of a solution to get her to live any kind of life. Is there a support group anyone can recommend that I contact. I need to talk to others and see what they have done to help with this problem.

All medical doctors are qualified to prescribe medicines. Some medicines require hospitalization to dispense it. You want to find a doctor in the phone book that specializes in substance abuse addictions. Or you can call a substance abuse hotline in MIcity and they should be able to refer you. You might have to go into south bend or merrillville for the right doctor, though. Maybe even into Munster. The docs in Munster usually are on staff in Chicago, so that might be better for you. Just don’t go to a place called Confidential Care in Dyer/St. John. Those doctors there are just for making the money, nothing else.

How Can I Help My Son Who Doesn’t Want Help? He Has No Goals, How Can I Motivate Him?

Question by strawberriesilove: How can I help my son who doesn’t want help? He has no goals, how can I motivate him?
My 17 yr old son suffers from mental illness. When he was younger he had ADHD, ODD and was learning disabled. As he got older he only got worse. By the time he was 14 yrs old our state’s laws (PA) gave him the right to refuse treatment. Ever since then he has flat out refused all attempts to help him. Counselors, social workers and educators have been unable to reach him. Family and friends pleas to him have fallen on deaf ears. When he was home all he wanted to do was lay around, watch TV, use the computer, listen to music and eat. He dropped out of school in the 10th grade and has recently begun experimenting with drugs and stealing from me. Currently he’s in an in-patient drug rehab still refusing to cooperate with the program. As his Mom I am at my wits ends. I don’t know what else to do. He wants to come home but lacks even the most basic of skills to get and keep a job. If this were your son what would you do? Honest, sincere, non-judgemental replies only please. Thank you.
